Devil’s Lake is one of those places that doesn’t need much explanation once you’re there.
Big views, quiet trails, the lake tucked between the bluffs — it feels a little removed from everything else in Wisconsin, which makes it perfect for an engagement session that doesn’t feel staged or rushed.
That’s exactly why we chose it.
Starting the session
We kept things simple from the beginning. No long plan, no complicated shot list — just walking, talking, and letting the session unfold naturally.
That’s usually when couples relax the fastest. When it feels more like being out together than “doing photos.”
Devil’s Lake helps with that. There’s space to move, different textures everywhere you turn, and enough quiet corners that you don’t feel like you’re performing for anyone.
Letting moments happen
Most of the session was just movement — walking along the trail, stopping when the light felt right, letting conversations happen in between.
Some of my favorite photos always come from those in-between seconds:
A laugh that wasn’t planned. A quick look at each other while deciding where to go next. That small pause when everything gets quiet for a moment.
Nothing dramatic — just real.
Why Devil’s Lake works so well for engagement photos
If you’re considering engagement photos in Wisconsin, Devil’s Lake State Park is one of the best locations for a reason:
The scenery feels big without overwhelming the couple
You get water, cliffs, forest, and open sky all in one place
It works in every season — summer greens, fall color, even soft winter light
There’s room to walk and let the session feel natural instead of static
It’s especially great for couples who don’t want their photos to feel overly posed and would rather just be out together somewhere beautiful.
Keeping it easy
The goal with engagement sessions is never to create perfect poses. It’s to create space where you can actually be yourselves, and the photos follow that.
A little guidance when needed, but mostly just letting things happen.
Devil’s Lake makes that easy.
Thinking about your own engagement session?
If you’re planning engagement photos in Wisconsin — whether at Devil’s Lake or somewhere else outdoors — I help with location ideas, timing for the best light, and keeping the whole experience relaxed so it feels like your day, not a production.
